Spinning Wheels
There’s nothing like a new year to inspire a new hobby. Some resolution-minded folk may opt for yoga, spinning classes, or a book club, but the more creative types might try their hand at Bitter Root Ceramics. This pottery studio teaches even the most artistically challenged to turn mud into art. From a lump of clay through the wedging, trimming, and glazing process, you’ll have your own masterpiece in no time with the help of easygoing teachers such as Lorna Barbrie and her business partner Jay Ward. Bitter Root is available for groups and private parties, too. Bring a bottle of wine, friends, and a pair of old pants (half the fun is getting dirty.) Summer Sculpting without the Gym
A grownup version of Color Me Mine, Bitter Root lets adults sculpt their dreams out of stoneware and porcelain. Owners Jay Ward and Lorna Barbrie opened the Beverly Boulevard studio this spring as an antidote to pottery workshops that “don’t give you free anything and have tons of rules.” Instead, Ward, who apprenticed for a Japanese potter, and Barbrie, a former television exec who learned to rely on pottery to tame Type-A tension, have created the ultimate free-spirit zone. Well-priced courses are all inclusive (clay, kiln time and glazes are all included) and instruction is geared towards channeling, not taming, your inner potter. Clay building, slab work and wheel classes are for up to eight people. For more information, visit www.bitterrootpottery.com or call 323.938.5511
