This hands-on workshop is designed for ceramic enthusiasts who want to strengthen their throwing fundamentals and develop confidence in trimming and refining their forms. Through live demonstrations, guided practice, and personalized instruction, participants will learn how to achieve balance, precision, and elegance in their wheel-thrown pieces.

Whether you’re looking to improve your centering control, refine wall thickness, or master clean and efficient trimming, this session offers a comprehensive approach to elevate your throwing skills and surface finishing techniques.

About Yunting LI

Yunting Li is a ceramic artist, educator, and glaze designer at Laguna Clay and Glaze Company, where she develops and fine-tunes glazes that artists around the globe trust. She earned her BFA in Ceramics from Jingdezhen Ceramic University, the renowned porcelain capital, and an MFA in Ceramics from Saga University in Japan.

With over ten years of experience, Yunting has taught extensively throughout the United States and internationally, leading workshops on Glaze Decoration & Chemistry, Underglaze Painting, and Wheel-Throwing Techniques. Additionally, she teaches at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA), where her classes are recognized for their blend of technical skill and an approachable, inspiring teaching style.

Fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese, Yunting offers a unique cross-cultural perspective in her instruction. Her workshops are renowned for being hands-on, engaging, and insightful, effectively demystifying glaze science while igniting creativity in artists of all levels.

Workshop Outline

1. Artist Introduction & Workshop Overview
– Brief artist talk and introduction to Yunting’s throwing philosophy and creative process
– Overview of the forms and techniques participants will explore during the workshop

2. Throwing & Trimming Tools Introduction
– Overview of essential throwing and trimming tools
– Discussion of tool selection, functions, and maintenance for consistent results

3. Centering & Foundation Techniques
– Demonstration and hands-on centering exercises
– Guidance on wheel speed control, hand positioning, and body posture for efficiency and precision

4. Throwing Demonstration
– Live demonstration of throwing off the hump, showcasing techniques for making bowls, cups, plates, and cylinder forms
– Emphasis on achieving even wall thickness, smooth transitions, and balanced proportions across different shapes
– Discussion of throwing efficiency, tool control, and rhythm for developing precision and consistency at the wheel

5. Guided Throwing Practice
– Individual throwing practice under close guidance
– One-on-one feedback to improve consistency, control, and confidence at the wheel

6. Trimming & Finishing Techniques
– Demonstration of trimming methods for creating refined foot rings and clean profiles
– Discussion of timing, ideal drying stages, and preparation for bisque firing
Participants are encouraged to bring their own leather-hard pieces if they would like to learn and practice trimming their own work

7. Q&A and Group Discussion
– Open discussion of common challenges in throwing and trimming
– Sharing of techniques for improving precision, form, and individual style
